Susan Boyle O Holy Night Fail
Susan Boyle has been left red-faced on US television, failing to follow the showbiz mantra "the show must go on" after suffering a coughing fit.
Boyle, invited to sing the Christmas tune "O Holy Night" on daytime chat show The View, didn't seem to realise that the show was streamed live, leading to an extremely awkward moment.
After breaking off the song to cough, Boyle backed away from the microphone and looked around, attempting to stop the performance.
The singer then asked producers if she could start over while the cameras continued to roll.
At this point one of the show's co-hosts can be heard uttering "oh my God...".

A $400,000 gift from Susan Boyle to Neil Finn
http://www.stuff.co.nz |
But the potential windfall is hardly going to change the fortunes of Finn – New Zealand's king of pop.
Even before Boyle covered it, Don't Dream It's Over had been the most performed work by a New Zealand artist overseas in all but one year since it was released, Mushroom Music Publishing general manager Paul McLaney said.
It was on Crowded House's 1986 self-titled debut, credited to Finn. Coldplay, Stevie Wonder, and Faith No More are among the artists who have covered it.
Songwriters generally get about 8c from each copy sold of an album with one of their songs on it.
The Gift has entered the New Zealand album charts at No1 this week, reaching platinum sales of over 15,000 in its first week. Sony is predicting it will sell about five million copies around the world.
That would mean a $400,000 payout for Finn in "mechanical royalties" – money given to an artist every time a recording of their song is made.
Most of the songs on The Gift are Christmas carols and in the public domain. Those likely to receive royalties alongside Finn are Leonard Cohen, for Hallelujah, and Lou Reed for Perfect Day.
Mr McLaney said artists outside Britain generally had little say in whether their songs were recorded by other artists but he doubted Finn would have any qualms about Boyle singing Don't Dream It's Over.
"I don't think it's doing any damage."
Finn had an "unprecedented level of respect" for a New Zealand artist abroad. "He's in that rarefied space of being a pop songwriter but writing songs that reach across the broad range of taste."
Boyle shot to fame on TV programme Britain's Got Talent last year.
Her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, sold 8.3 million copies worldwide.

U2 honoured the Pike River miners during the song One Tree Hill.
Two of music's biggest acts paid tribute to the Pike River miners at a sold out Mt Smart Stadium on Thursday night.
There was little doubt that a band with the social conscience of U2 would acknowledge the tragedy, even during the entertainment behemoth that is their 360 tour.
"People have ways of dealing with grief, in Ireland we sing," said charismatic front man Bono before an emotional version of Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.
They followed that with local favourite One Tree Hill as the names of the 29 dead scrolled down the massive screen at Mt Smart Stadium on Thursday night.
Earlier, hiphop mogul Jay Z dedicated Forever Young to the miners as he said "they will always be in our hearts and they will always be forever young".
Those were two moving moments in an otherwise upbeat night as U2 returned to New Zealand after an absence of exactly four years.
In a show of more than 20 songs there was a run through their catalogue of hits including Beautiful Day, Elevation, Vertigo, Sunday Bloody Sunday, One and With or Without You.
They were interspersed with new songs like Magnificent and Get On Your Boots off their uneven 2009 album No Line on the Horizon.

10 double passes to U2 to be won today
Three hours in Auckland was enough time for Ricky Malcolm and Cameron Betts to win 99 U2 concert tickets and meet American hip-hop star Jay-Z.
"We were standing there and Jay-Z walked past, so we said `hey bro' and he said `hey guys'," Ricky said.
Yesterday morning the New Plymouth pair were greeted at Auckland airport by the Cambell Live crew, who filmed them being taken to Mt Smart Stadium to see the concert set-up and their reaction to winning the national competition.
"We were sitting there waiting for the other two finalists to arrive and they said we better announce the winner and it was us," Ricky said.
"Our faces just lit up and we were screaming."
And after the prize of 99 tickets was handed out the boys got a surprise win of 10 inner circle tickets, which allow them to get even closer to the stage – and possibly another close encounter with their new mate Jay-Z, who will open for U2's concerts tomorrow and Friday.
Ricky and Cameron were part of a five-strong New Plymouth group who recreated the U2 video Elevation for the Cambell Live contest and plan to divvy up the tickets among themselves.
But they also want to give away 10 double passes.
If you want to win one of the double passes you need to be one of the first 10 people, dressed as Bono, to meet the group on Puke Ariki Landing in New Plymouth at 5.30pm today.
The group encouraged people of all ages to dress up and race down to the landing, but warned you must be decked out in the lead singer's rock costume.
"We want them really dressed up.
"They have to show us they are a hard core fan," Cameron said.

Rihanna's message for todays youth
The written word is not Rihanna's friend. Here, she poses with children while wearing a necklace that says "Fuck You." Don't you hate it when adorable children interfere with your badass 'tude?
To be fair, this wasn't Rihanna's fault: The child fans bombarded her while she was wandering the streets of New York. It's a little like the time you surprised your significant other by opening the door naked, only to discover Grandma was dropping by to return that casserole dish early. It's so awkward when disparate spheres of self-presentation intersect. But, hey, these kids have a way cooler memento than bargained for: Wall-to-wall tabloid coverage! Everybody wins when pop stars corrupt America's youth.

“Born This Way” the new “I Will Survive” – and Kiwi remix singled out by the NYT
A Lady Gaga* remix by Auckland musician Patty Boy (the fourth most subscribed New Zealand musician on youtube) has been featured in a New York Times blog.
The New York Times called the remix "a pulsating battle cry of selfhood that plays in gay nightclubs, at circuit parties and on fan-made videos across the Web."
*The article also quoted Elton John as saying the Lady Gaga song Born This Way - which Cavill based his remix on - would "completely get rid of Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive as the gay anthem".

Disturbed announce New Zealand show dates
Thr Rock.net.nz - Live Rock articles - Live Rock - Music & Events

69 and pumping all night long
Ruth Flowers, is the matriarch and the hippest English deejay of our time.
At 69 years old, the woman known as MAMY ROCK is the latest sensation of the European club scene.
Following a high‐profile stint as resident DJ at the very private Villa Murano during the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in front of stars including Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey and an exceptional set in January 2010 at the legendary Queen club on the Champs Elysées Paris, Ruth Flowers is definitely in the midst of an unexpected international success story at the age of 69.
After the launch of her first single « Still Rocking » in July and a successful Summer Tour through Europe's best Clubs and Festivals (including Glastonbury), the fabulous Mamy Rock will finally rock the USA. «The hippest Deejane in circulation», according to Vanity Fair, will give her US debut at the « I love electro » Festival on Nov. 5th in Los Angeles California.
« Everything began the night, when my grandson, whom I'm very close to, celebrated his birthday at a disco in London. He invited me to join him and his friends. When I arrived the doormen wouldn't allow me inside. Its true, I didn't look like their usual customer (laughs)... I did get in eventually... only to be dumbfounded...there was such an electric atmosphere! It was so different from the dances & the bands I used to go to when I was younger. There was a real osmosis between the music and the lights, it energized me!...made me feel so much younger!
That night shattered my view of things, especially the way I saw my life...I had a lot of free time...I discussed my idea with my grandson, he thought I'd gone mad. Sometime after our talk, an acquaintance put me in touch with a young French producer, Aurelien Simon. I told him my idea and he took on the challenge. I wasn't sure about it working but was prepared to give it a go, Aurelien was convinced and he took me with him. Since then I have made many trips around Europe, met quite a number of D.J.s. Aurelien introduced me to electro and house music. I went to clubs and been practicing a lot with the new machines. It was really fun!! Now I know I can make everybody move their ass on the dance floor (laughs)...»
The European Press has declared the 69 Year old Deejane from Bristol a role model, but also as a fashion and glamour icon. Adidas Originals along with the famous Marangoni Fashion Institute invited the coolest Granny on the planet to rock their 75th anniversary party in Milan. Previously, she entertained elite guests including Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis at the Karl Lagerfeld Chanel Party in the VIP Room at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.
Whoever said you have to mellow with age? Certainly not Mamy Rock, who gives retirement a big kick in the pants ! She is an unusual and charismatic woman who with great serenity presents her unique and dynamic personality. Nice and eccentric, strong and full of energy, she likes to have fun and share the good times with all around her.
Everyone loves Ruth Flowers: the trendiest clubs on the planet, all have their sights on this DJ with a difference, who inspires the young while encouraging respect of senior citizens. On Youtube her videos have reached more than 4 Million visitors and the French TV Canal said that « she mixes like the Queen of the Night! ».
More than mere DJ sets, Ruth Flower's mixes are fabulous shows bringing together the latest electro-hits that all the club‐kids love as well as the old school classics she adores. Ruth Flowers is a unique opportunity to meet an Artist who spins stereotypes about old people, but also the DJ world on their head.
« …Indeed, I'd rather sign a contract with a record company than sign up to a nursing home! »

Fun Fact #52: Where is Madonna's star?
Madonna does not have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was selected for the honour in 1990 but she showed no interest and the invitation has now expired. Walk of Fame spokeswoman Ana Martinez-Holler states that, in order to receive a star, Madonna would have to be "resubmitted for a nomination," adding, "since she is not interested, I highly doubt that she will give a nominator the permission to do so."

November's Band to keep an eye on - Conditions
Shred favorite’s Conditions started the year with the news we’d all been waiting for; the band had finally signed on the dotted line with a label. After many offers and much speculation the guys joined Good Fight Music, a new independent label owned and run by Ferret Music owners Carl Severson and Paul Conroy. And after dropping that bombshell it seemed the good news just kept coming.
Not ones to conform to the ’scenes’ of modern music, Conditions strive to create music the good old fashioned way: with heart, honesty, integrity and – most of all- with real instruments! The band aren’t ones to hide their dislike of self-labeled ‘musicians’ who are anything but. Conditions recordings and live shows have been highly praised by their fellow artists as well as by the critics – back in 2008 the band Paramore invited them to open their UK tour alongside New Found Glory and Kids in Glass Houses, and popcore band A Day To Remember have even been known to express their support of the guys

Katy Perry sells out, second show announced
http://t3.gstatic.com/images |
Perry, who recently wed British comedian Russell Brand in India, will now perform two dates at Auckland's Vector Arena, on May 7 and May 8.
The pop star is known for her tight-fitting outfits and controversial hits like I Kissed A Girl. She is touring on the back of her recently-released album Teenage Dream.
"I am ecstatic to be able to see the glittering faces and also to go to New Zealand for the first time," Perry said.
"I love going somewhere new because there's a special feeling in the air. It's like when you meet someone you love for the first time."
Perry promised Kiwi fans that her performance will be an extravaganza.
"I want it to be sensory overload. I'm figuring out the nuances, because I have these wild ideas, but they're not really traditional concert things," she told the Sunday Star-Times.
Tickets for the second show are on sale now.

Sting and NZSO - Symphonicity Tour
The Mission Estate Concert is very proud to announce Sting – accompanied by a 50 piece symphony orchestra and band – will extend his critically-acclaimed Symphonicity tour to take in New Zealand’s biggest annual concert on Saturday, February 12, 2011.
Following sold-out performances across North America and Europe, Symphonicity finds Sting performing his greatest hits, re-imagined for symphonic arrangement. Drawing from a diverse and illustrious career that has produced numerous multi-platinum albums, a staggering list of number one songs, countless accolades and worldwide record sales of nearly 100 million, Sting’s most celebrated songs have been re-interpreted with brand new orchestrations arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, David Hartley, Michel Legrand, Rob Mathes, Vince Mendoza, Steven Mercurio, Bill Ross, Robert Sadin, and Nicola Tescari.
Selections, created especially for this tour, will include fan-favorites such as The Police hits “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, “Roxanne”, “Next To You” and “Every Breath You Take,” to notable songs from Sting’s enduring solo career – “Englishman in New York,” “Fragile,” “Russians,” “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” “Fields of Gold,” and “Desert Rose.”
Sting will also be joined by a group of accomplished musicians, comprised of Dominic Miller (Sting’s longtime guitarist), Rhani Krija (Sting’s longtime multi-genre percussionist), David Cossin (a multi-percussion specialist in new and experimental music and featured member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars), Jo Lawry (vocalist) and Ira Coleman (bassist).
The North American Symphonicity tour has taken the States by storm, with reviews capturing the spirit of the project and audience reaction thus far:
“. . . the real stars of the show were the arrangements: classical twists on classic hits that make Symphonicity a must-see.” - Globe and Mail
“... an all-star cast of arrangers reworked the songs, and time clearly had been spent making sure the pop musicians and orchestral players onstage would work together to create a genuinely hybrid sound.” – Los Angeles Times
“I am looking forward to performing in New Zealand, having a whole new palate of musical colors to work with and reinventing the songs that have been the staples of my live shows for over thirty years,” says Sting.
To accompany Sting’s world tour, Deutsche Grammophon recently released a companion CD, Symphonicities, to critical acclaim. Highlights include fan-favorites culled from The Police songbook such as “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”, “Roxanne” and “Next To You,” as well as songs from Sting’s enduring solo career including “Englishman in New York,” “I Burn for You,” “Why Should I Cry for You” and “She’s Too Good For Me,” among many others. Symphonicities is produced by Rob Mathes and Sting, and mixed by Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac) and Claudius Mittendorfer (Interpol, Franz Ferdinand).
Sting’s first venture into the classical realm began with the success of his #1 album “Songs from the Labyrinth,” a lute-based interpretation of the music of 16th century composer John Dowland, released in 2006 on Deutsche Grammophon. After completing the enormously successful Police reunion world tour, Sting returned to pursue his passion for combining musical genres with his most recent release “If On A Winter’s Night...” which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s classical chart.
Prior to starting his solo career, Sting was the principal songwriter, lead singer and bassist of the rock music band The Police. As a solo musician and member of The Police, Sting has received 16 Grammy Awards, two Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year. He is also a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

NZ Bowie Rock Opera, promoted by Bowie Himself
From www.davidbowie.com
Let's turn on with me and you're not alone...
No, that's not Doctor Who's TARDIS about to move to another space-time continuum above...it's the Ziggy phone box, as seen on the back of the Ziggy Stardust album and used in the 1974 press adverts for the UK Rock 'N Roll Suicide 45, appropriately enough.
This news item is about a rock opera called ROCK AND ROLL SUICIDE taking place in Arrowtown, New Zealand from Wednesday the 27th through to Friday the 29th...and there is a link to the Time Lord's machine.
The thing is, even though I'm posting this during the afternoon of Tuesday the 26th, these NZ guys are from the future and they'll shortly be getting up on the morning of the 27th, the day of the first show. Bloody weirdoes.
Anyway, over to the details of what's about to go down...
Rock and Roll Suicide stars (from left) Shaun Vining, as Idol, Max Gunn (17), as Joe Rockstar, and Pearly McGrath, as Susie Diva, Joe's girlfriend, pose during the company's first dress rehearsal with the band, in the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall, on Wednesday night. The rock opera debuts in the hall on Wednesday and plays until Friday. Photograph by James Beech.
London 1972.
JOE ROCKSTAR, is a young man who dreams of becoming a rock star. He takes his guitar and heads to London, where he is jostled and confronted, but eventually joins the groove. He finds himself in a local nightclub, where he sees IDOL on the stage for the first time. He is amazed by IDOL, and inspired. He decides this is who he wants to be.
JOE also notices SUZY DIVA and they quickly fall in love with each other and their mutual desire for fame. They dance together and are spotted by JUPITER, the record executive and his evil side-kick VEX, who quickly makes them a “deal”. JOE seizes the opportunity for fortune and fame and SUZI reluctantly agrees. JUPITER starts to favour JOE over IDOL and the public loses their love of IDOL, and embraces JOE. His fall from Grace pushes IDOL over the edge and he succumbs to madness.
Meanwhile JOE is eating up the hype. He swears to SUZI that he will not forget her as his fame climbs and hers stays the same. But this is not to be, as he begins to upstage her, neglect her, and indulge too far, too fast into his new found world of drugs and fame. Eventually, his drinking and drug taking over step the boundary, and SUZI leaves. He is left with his empty glamorous world and becomes self-destructive. JUPITER pushes him to keep going, regardless of his obvious decline. When JUPITER sees that JOE is blowing it on-stage, he drops JOE and embraces a new face, DJ.
JOE tries to commit suicide and his body loses life. However, he chooses life, and when SUZY finally lets go of his lifeless hand, he miraculously regains consciousness and reaches out for her. He escapes total destruction and reclaims himself, his music, and his love for SUZY regardless of fame.
Then everybody sings “Ziggy Stardust”.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can read more regarding the show over at the Otago Daily Times, where director and co-producer, Margaret O'Hanlon, also talks about the production.

The Beach Boys deny lip-sync claim
As reported on fasterlouder.com.au Mike Love has angrily denied claims that he lip-synced at a recent Beach Boys show on the Gold Coast. The much maligned singer doesn’t need to lip-sync to tarnish the legacy of the Beach Boys, but the accusation that he is following the lead of Ashlee Simpson and Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland by lip-syncing at live shows is hardly welcome news.
The lip-sync claims came following Last Saturday night’s 600 Sounds festival on the Gold Coast, presented as part of the V8 Supercar post race entertainment.
According to V8 Supercars Australia Chairman Tony Cochrane “It’s a great shame some have insulted such an iconic band for the sake of a headline and some extra cheap points” adding that the “speculation was erroneous and totally false, and while there may have been a small number of patrons leaving the site due to the confusion, this number would have been a very small percentage in comparison to the approximately 20,000 strong crowd at the venue for the concert on the night”.
An official statement from the band and concert promoters angry denies the claims, declaring that “Suggestions that The Beach Boys were lip syncing are false. A slight delay between the vision being played on the big screens at the 600 Sounds presented by Hard Rock precinct and what was happening on stage did occur, as sometimes happens with live performances, and this may have contributed to the confusion felt by some event-goers… For many years the Beach Boys have been one of the world’s best live acts and they still are.”
The band performing at the Supercars event didn’t include Brian Wilson, or any of his brothers, but does feature founding Beach Boys member Mike Love and Bruce Johnston who joined the band in 1965.
Mike Love responded to the allegations noting that “We pride ourselves on providing a great live show to our millions of fans around the world and spent time that day sound checking our vocals to ensure a great live mix, in our almost 50 years of performing The Beach Boys have never lip-synched and we are not about to start!”

Yo stop, collaborate and listen. Ice is back with a....home improvement show!
“After his chart-topping hit, ‘Ice Ice Baby,’ Rob turned his focus on a new hobby, buying land and flipping houses.” for a new home improvement show on the DIY network.
The series, beginning Thursday on the DIY, is not just another paean to celebrity failure. No; it is instead a tribute to ingenuity, to turning lemons into lemonade, to get up and go, when you get up and go to Home Depot. The show follows Mr. Van Winkle through a single renovation over the course of 10 episodes as he overhauls, corner by corner, a 7,000-square-foot house on a lake in Palm Beach, Fla. — a house that doesn’t say Addison Mizner as much as it says boom-era Gothic revival McMansion down on its luck. Every appliance and fixture had been stripped out of its socket by its desperate owners. Mr. Van Winkle scooped the place up for $429,000 as it was headed toward foreclosure. He hopes to turn it around for sale at about a million bucks.
It isn’t by whim that you wind up earning a living with jackhammers when you once had the fastest-selling hip-hop album around. But this is no downfall. This resurrection is holy. As he proves in “The Vanilla Ice Project,” Mr. Van Winkle has talent. The next time you renovate, you will dream of Ice and what he can do with bricklaying and budgets.
Impressively conversant on the subject of landscaping, he is a big proponent of curb appeal and sets about in the initial episodes dressing up the house’s front and backyards. He is a walking lesson plan in horticultural fact: “Every time you see a coconut palm, you know you’re south of Orlando,” he tells us. He also knows how to deal with alkaline issues when they come up with plants. “We’ll change the pH levels of what’s going on down here with these roots and pretty much remedy this problem,” he announces to one of his sidekicks. He likes colorful perennials and landscape lighting for walkways, and believes that foxtails aren’t good near a pool.
This is the kind of knowledge base that ought to be rewarded at a premium. If someone is going to profit from the depressed South Florida real estate market, let it be Vanilla Ice, a man who can get his hands full of grout and call the right electricians to lay down the feeder cable.

Guy Sebastian blows it...
Singer Guy Sebastian is the second Australian star in a week to learn the hard way that live television is a dangerous business.
The X Factor judge made an embarrassing gaffe while introducing one of the acts on the live talent show.
He began by explaining how he had met the all-girl act Mahogany he had been mentoring on the show.
"Well, I met these girls on a tour that I did a little while ago, and they blew me away then, and then they walked into the audition room and blew me again," Sebastian said, before realising what he had just said.

Hollies to play New Plymouth's Bowl of Brooklands
http://www.prideofmanchester.com/music/hollies.htm |
The show will be the third time the English rock group have performed at the Bowl, first appearing there in the mid-70s.
The New Zealand tour coincides with the release of their new compilation album, The Midas Touch, which focuses on the group's 60s and 70s recordings.
Promoter Ian Magan, of Pacific Entertainment, described the band as "pop royalty."
"The Hollies have a pedigree most groups can only dream of," he said.
The band will also perform at Tauranga, Matakana, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington and Auckland.
Unlike so many groups of their day, the Hollies have continued touring and recording with the current six-piece line up Tony Hicks, Bobby Elliott, Ray Stiles, Ian Parker, Steve Lauri and lead vocalist Peter Howarth.
The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Among their hits are Air That I Breathe, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, Bus Stop, Long Cool Woman and Carrie Ann.
Tickets go on sale October 9 at Ticketmaster.
