A $400,000 gift from Susan Boyle to Neil Finn

http://www.stuff.co.nz
Frumpy pop sensation Susan Boyle's new album The Gift may well be a $400,000 windfall for Neil Finn, who wrote one of the songs.

But the potential windfall is hardly going to change the fortunes of Finn – New Zealand's king of pop.

Even before Boyle covered it, Don't Dream It's Over had been the most performed work by a New Zealand artist overseas in all but one year since it was released, Mushroom Music Publishing general manager Paul McLaney said.

It was on Crowded House's 1986 self-titled debut, credited to Finn. Coldplay, Stevie Wonder, and Faith No More are among the artists who have covered it.

Songwriters generally get about 8c from each copy sold of an album with one of their songs on it.

The Gift has entered the New Zealand album charts at No1 this week, reaching platinum sales of over 15,000 in its first week. Sony is predicting it will sell about five million copies around the world.

That would mean a $400,000 payout for Finn in "mechanical royalties" – money given to an artist every time a recording of their song is made.

Most of the songs on The Gift are Christmas carols and in the public domain. Those likely to receive royalties alongside Finn are Leonard Cohen, for Hallelujah, and Lou Reed for Perfect Day.

Mr McLaney said artists outside Britain generally had little say in whether their songs were recorded by other artists but he doubted Finn would have any qualms about Boyle singing Don't Dream It's Over.

"I don't think it's doing any damage."

Finn had an "unprecedented level of respect" for a New Zealand artist abroad. "He's in that rarefied space of being a pop songwriter but writing songs that reach across the broad range of taste."

Boyle shot to fame on TV programme Britain's Got Talent last year.

Her debut album, I Dreamed a Dream, sold 8.3 million copies worldwide.

NZ Bowie Rock Opera, promoted by Bowie Himself

From www.davidbowie.com
Let's turn on with me and you're not alone...

No, that's not Doctor Who's TARDIS about to move to another space-time continuum above...it's the Ziggy phone box, as seen on the back of the Ziggy Stardust album and used in the 1974 press adverts for the UK Rock 'N Roll Suicide 45, appropriately enough.

This news item is about a rock opera called ROCK AND ROLL SUICIDE taking place in Arrowtown, New Zealand from Wednesday the 27th through to Friday the 29th...and there is a link to the Time Lord's machine.

The thing is, even though I'm posting this during the afternoon of Tuesday the 26th, these NZ guys are from the future and they'll shortly be getting up on the morning of the 27th, the day of the first show. Bloody weirdoes.

Anyway, over to the details of what's about to go down...

Rock and Roll Suicide stars (from left) Shaun Vining, as Idol, Max Gunn (17), as Joe Rockstar, and Pearly McGrath, as Susie Diva, Joe's girlfriend, pose during the company's first dress rehearsal with the band, in the Arrowtown Athenaeum Hall, on Wednesday night. The rock opera debuts in the hall on Wednesday and plays until Friday. Photograph by James Beech.

London 1972.

JOE ROCKSTAR, is a young man who dreams of becoming a rock star. He takes his guitar and heads to London, where he is jostled and confronted, but eventually joins the groove. He finds himself in a local nightclub, where he sees IDOL on the stage for the first time. He is amazed by IDOL, and inspired. He decides this is who he wants to be.

JOE also notices SUZY DIVA and they quickly fall in love with each other and their mutual desire for fame. They dance together and are spotted by JUPITER, the record executive and his evil side-kick VEX, who quickly makes them a “deal”. JOE seizes the opportunity for fortune and fame and SUZI reluctantly agrees. JUPITER starts to favour JOE over IDOL and the public loses their love of IDOL, and embraces JOE. His fall from Grace pushes IDOL over the edge and he succumbs to madness.

Meanwhile JOE is eating up the hype. He swears to SUZI that he will not forget her as his fame climbs and hers stays the same. But this is not to be, as he begins to upstage her, neglect her, and indulge too far, too fast into his new found world of drugs and fame. Eventually, his drinking and drug taking over step the boundary, and SUZI leaves. He is left with his empty glamorous world and becomes self-destructive. JUPITER pushes him to keep going, regardless of his obvious decline. When JUPITER sees that JOE is blowing it on-stage, he drops JOE and embraces a new face, DJ.

JOE tries to commit suicide and his body loses life. However, he chooses life, and when SUZY finally lets go of his lifeless hand, he miraculously regains consciousness and reaches out for her. He escapes total destruction and reclaims himself, his music, and his love for SUZY regardless of fame.

Then everybody sings “Ziggy Stardust”.

You can read more regarding the show over at the Otago Daily Times, where director and co-producer, Margaret O'Hanlon, also talks about the production.

I'll leave you with a list of the songs performed during ROCK AND ROLL SUICIDE with the performer in each case....

Hollies to play New Plymouth's Bowl of Brooklands

http://www.prideofmanchester.com/music/hollies.htm
The Hollies will play at New Plymouth's TSB Bowl of Brooklands on February 6 as part of a seven-stop New Zealand tour.

The show will be the third time the English rock group have performed at the Bowl, first appearing there in the mid-70s.

The New Zealand tour coincides with the release of their new compilation album, The Midas Touch, which focuses on the group's 60s and 70s recordings.

Promoter Ian Magan, of Pacific Entertainment, described the band as "pop royalty."
"The Hollies have a pedigree most groups can only dream of," he said.

The band will also perform at Tauranga, Matakana, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington and Auckland.

Unlike so many groups of their day, the Hollies have continued touring and recording with the current six-piece line up Tony Hicks, Bobby Elliott, Ray Stiles, Ian Parker, Steve Lauri and lead vocalist Peter Howarth.

The Hollies were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Among their hits are Air That I Breathe, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, Bus Stop, Long Cool Woman and Carrie Ann.

Free Gig For Christchurchians

http://www.theponses.blogspot.com/
New Zealand musicians are joining together for a benefit gig Band Together Concert for Canterbury, to be held in North Hagley Park on October 23.

Prime Minister John Key, Mayor Bob Parker, Auckland promoter Paul Ellis and Opshop frontman Jason Kerrison announced the upcoming show at Canterbury University today while Key was visiting students to thank them for their clean up efforts in the wake of the earthquake.

"It's been overwhelming how many people have wanted to become involved in this project. Since I've been home I've really noticed how shook up people are by the earthquake. You don't realise how much when you're not here on the ground. I hope this concert will be a chance for the people of Christchurch to both let off some steam and know that the rest of the country is behind them 100% It will run from 12 noon to 10pm and will be televised live from 6pm-10pm,'' Kerrison told The Press.

The line-up for the free concert contains a strong Christchurch contingent including Anika Moa, Opshop, the Feelers, Dane Rumble and J Williams alongside other household names like Dave Dobbyn and the Exponents who are reforming. Their song Christchurch (In Cashel Street I Wait) is the theme song of the event.

Kerrison says that Christchurch group Shapeshifter had hoped to be part of the event but, because of a date clash, would not be involved. However, they are hoping to stage their own fundraising shows when they can.

If you would like to donate to the Christchurch earthquake relief efforts you can visit the Red Cross website.

Idol's Adam Lambert to play New Zealand

Controversial American Idol star Adam Lambert is set to perform in New Zealand for the first time.

The singer, who was runner-up in the reality show's eighth season, will perform at Trusts Stadium in Auckland on October 17.

He promises to bring his full audio-visual show, with a spectacal that combines 60s psycadelia, 70s disco and 80s glam-goth.

Lambert caused controversy at the American Music Awards last year with a sexually charged performance that included a kiss with his male keyboard player. Networks were flooded with complaints, but Lambert defended the show.

"I admit I did get carried away, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I do see how people got offended, and that was not my intention," he said.

"If it had been a female pop performer doing the moves that were on the stage, I don't think there'd be nearly as much of an outrage at all," Lambert added. "I think it's because I'm a gay male."

Tickets go on sale on September 13.

Metallica still to rock Christchurch

Rockers Metallica are refusing to let New Zealand's recent earthquakes stop them from performing for fans here.
Devotees feared three big quakes over the past five days, including a 7.1-magnitude one that hit the country's South Island, would prompt Metallica to postpone two sold-out shows set for Christchurch later this month (Sep10).
But the band insists the shows at the CBS Canterbury Arena - close to the epicentre of the earthquakes - will go ahead as planned on 21 and 22 September (10).
Engineers are currently assessing the 9,000-capacity venue for damage, but bosses insist it doesn't appear the arena has been damaged at all.

No Sleep Til Megadeath, NOFX & Dropkick Murphys

Seminal thrash metal act Megadeth will headline heavy music festival No Sleep Til, arriving in Auckland in December.

No Sleep Til Auckland will also feature punk rock legends NOFX and Dropkick Murphys.
Other American bands coming to the festival include comedy metal act Gwar, punk rockers Alkaline Trio, deathcore band Suicide Silence, metalcore band August Burns Red and post-hardcore group We Came As Romans.

Also on the line-up are Swedish doom metal band Katatonia and Canadian classic metal band 3 Inches of Blood.

Representing Australia at No Sleep Til Auckland are metalcore act Parkway Drive and punk rockers Frenzal Rhomb.

Local acts playing the festival include Antagonist AD, The Outsiders, Shitrippers and Leeches – a new band formed from past members of Bleeders, Goodnight Nurse, Antagonist AD and Brick Vs Face.
Headline act Megadeth was formed by frontman Dave Mustaine after he was kicked out of Metallica in 1983.

Mustaine is widely regarded as one of the most gifted metal guitarists of all time, both as a rhythm and a lead player. In 2009 he was ranked No. 1 in Joel McIver's book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists.
Megadeth have recently performed a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 1990 Rust in Peace album, performing the album in its entirety. Kiwi fans will experience this for themselves at No Sleep Til Auckland.

Rust in Peace includes the classic thrash hits ‘Holy Wars... The Punishment Due’ and ‘Hangar 18’ and the 20th anniversary marked the first time other tracks from the album had ever been performed live such as ‘Five Magics’, ‘Poison Was the Cure’ and ‘Rust in Peace... Polaris’.
Megadeth last played in Auckland in 2009 alongside Slayer. At the time, David Farrier caught up with Mustaine – watch the full interview.

“It's such an exciting opportunity to be working with such an amazing line-up of not only some of the biggest names in alternative music, but a team of people dedicated and passionate about bringing this music to Kiwi fans,” says Katie Macrae of Chicks that Scream, NZ representatives for No Sleep Til Auckland.

“Bands love coming to New Zealand and we love having them here - best December ever!”
The festival will take place at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds on December 10.
Tickets go on sale midday September 9.

U2 360 to hit New Zealand in November

The Irish band yesterday confirmed they will perform at Mt Smart Stadium in November followed by four concerts in Australia.

Hip hop star Jay Z is to join U2 for the band's tour of Australia and New Zealand later this year.
Jay Z last played in Australia in 2006 and has never played in New Zealand.

New Zealand event spokeswoman Bridget de Laundry says about 54 percent of tickets are priced under $100, starting at $39.90.

The low prices are due to the specially built 50m-high stage with a rotating bridges and giant video system.

“The extra capacity U2 360 gives us means that there are a large number, several thousand in fact, of low priced tickets at every show,” says U2 tour producer/promoter Arthur Fogel, CEO of Live Nation Global Touring.

Organisers are expecting the more than 50,000 tickets to sell out quickly, and a second concert has not been ruled out.

“A second show is not confirmed. There are only three stages in use on the Australasian tour and they leapfrog from city to city, it takes eight days to build them and three-four to remove them, either side of the performance days,” says de Launay.

Tickets go on sale Friday, September 3 but U2.com subscribers will be able to buy tickets about five days ahead of the public.

U2 360 has already played to over 4 million people and is set to smash all previous records and become the highest-attended concert tour of all time.

Bringing the U2 360 production to New Zealand is no small feat. Six 747 freighters are required to fly the production to New Zealand.

The stage weighs 590 tonnes with all of the production gear hanging from it, and covers 6000 square meters.

'The Claw' itself stands 30.53m high, and with the pylon its 51.8m. That means it’s higher than most stadium roofs.  Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium roof will have to be “cracked” and stay open to allow the pylon to be installed.

Tyler to join Idol

First two sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler had already worked out a deal to judge the next season of American Idol. Now Aerosmith bassist Todd Hamilton is also confirming the news:

American Idol producers won't announce the season 10 judges panel until next month, but Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton has all but confirmed that Steven Tyler will be occupying one of the seats left by Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell. "Steven is doing American Idol. The ink is dry on that," Hamilton told the Newark Star-Ledger . "Steven is someone who absolutely lives to be in front of an audience, and the people closest to him know how witty and entertaining he can be. I don't know if American Idol will be rock 'n' roll enough for him, but it is an opportunity for millions of people to see another side of Steven Tyler."

U2's new song

Footage of U2 rehearsing a new song has surface online and you can watch it by scrolling down.

The short film was captured by fans who are camped out near the gates of the Stadio Olimpico di Torino in Italy.

The group are rehearsing at the venue head of their gig on Friday (August 6), their first since Bono underwent back surgery, which forced them to cancel a number of US shows and their headline slot at Glastonbury.

As U2Tours.com reports, Bono and co have also been heard rehearsing a number of songs including 'Get On Your Boots', 'Magnificent' and 'Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me', the band's 1995 single from the Batman Forever soundtrack

Cup of Gaga

Lady Gaga is set to become the face of Twinings tea, who may create a new flavour in her honour.

The flamboyant singer's love of the hot beverage is well-documented. She regularly requests the drink during interviews, and is often seen in public with her pet tea cup and saucer.

Gaga has apparently been approached by several tea companies who think she would be the perfect choice to front their campaigns. However, she is particularly enamoured with Twinings, who are said to have offered her a multi-million-pound deal.

Twinings are an English firm dating back 300 years, and are famed for offering many different flavours of the drink. It is this which appeals to Gaga, especially as there is talk of a new flavour being invented just for her.

"Her management have received a load of offers from major tea companies but Twinings are the front-runners. They want to launch a new tea with her face on it and discussions are taking place at the top level," a source told British newspaper The Sun.

"Names like The Taste Of Gaga are being batted about. The idea is to have tasting sessions in which she would participate.

"The tasters are coming up with a tea with an oriental flavour. They want to market tea to a new, younger generation - particularly in America, and Gaga is making drinking tea cool again."

Gaga performed at Sir Elton John’s White Tie And Tiara Ball in June, and he presented her with a vintage teapot to say thanks.

During an appearance on a British television show last year, Gaga refused to leave her cup backstage and answered questions while sipping the beverage.

Metallica to play Christchurch - update

Metallica have added yet another concert to their New Zealand itinerary.

The band will now play at the CBS Canterbury Arena on September 21 and 22, weeks before their sold-out shows at Auckland's Vector Arena.

September 21 and 22: Christchurch, CBS Canterbury Arena
October 13 and 14: Auckland, Vector Arena

Heavy metal heavyweights Metallica will play a show in Christchurch, following an online campaign from South Island fans which attracted over 11,000 supporters.

The band will play at the CBS Canterbury Arena on September 22, weeks before their sold-out shows at Auckland's Vector Arena.

In a statement issued in response to a Facebook campaign, the band said "sometimes, you do get what you want! You asked (okay, demanded!) and we heard ya."

Metallica's last New Zealand appearance was in 2004 on the Auckland leg of the Big Day Out tour. The band has not headlined its own New Zealand tour since 1998, when it played shows in Auckland and Wellington in support of the 1997 album, ReLoad.

Because of limitations presented by the Christchurch arena, the band's full concert setup will not be used on September 22. The 360 degree stage setup has been used on Metallica's World Magnetic tour since 2008 and will be seen at both Auckland shows.

"It's gonna be us and YOU old-school 'club style' in an arena making a whole lot of noise together, and that's what counts."

Bee Gee (just the one) Tour

One of the infamously falsetto-voiced trio the Bee Gees, Robin Gibb, has announced a three date New Zealand tour.

As part of his Bee Gees Greatest Hits tour, Gibb will perform with the Pointer Sisters, comprising sisters Anita and Ruth with Ruth's granddaughter, Sadako, at the TSB Bank Arena, Wellington and the CBS Canterbury Arena between November 10-12.

Gibb, who has maintained a successful solo career, last performed in New Zealand in 1999 when he played to more than 60,000 people in Auckland's Western Springs, one of the largest concert attendances in New Zealand history.

"It's been a long time, but I'm really, really pleased to be coming back one more time to play for the New Zealand fans," Gibb says.

The Bee Gees are the only group to have recorded number one songs in four different decades and there are more than 6500 cover version of the songs.

Gibb will perform the group's biggest songs including Massachusetts, How Deep is Your Love, Stayin' Alive, Night Fever, You Win Again, Nights on Broadway, Jive Talking, I Started A Joke, Words, To Love Somebody, New York Mining Disaster and many more.

The Gibb brothers, Barry, and twins Robin and Maurice, were born in Britain to British parents but moved to Australia in the mid '50s where their music career began, gaining their first chart success there with Spicks and Specks. Inducted into the Rock'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, it is estimated The Bee Gees have sold more than 200 million records. Maurice died in 2003. In 2009 Barry and Robin announced plans to record and perform together as the Bee Gees.

Tickets go on sale on Monday, July 5 through ticketek.co.nz.

"Why did it take us 5 years to get here? Can't wait to come back to New Zealand. Please, dear God, let it be soon. Never had so much fun in 3 days in my whole life. NZ, we'll miss you!" she said after the show.
